They cost more than you imagine

Por sumily

The universities, generally, usually provide accommodation in residences of international students, these are located near public transport and shopping centers. The costs are low in relation to other types of housing. Residences can be the best option to meet new people and live a complete experience. That's the kind of propaganda that all the universities sell to you.The first are usually located in large buildings that are part of the campus or apartments located in areas close to it.

This option is very interesting for its comfort, price, security and independence. And it is the university itself that manages and manages meals, cleaning, sports facilities, technology, libraries and social areas. Rooms are regularly shared, although there are also individual rooms that the student can decorate to their liking.

On several occasions, the press has echoed the complaints made by percent of university students in the US. UU., who claim to have been hungry and have no place to sleep sometimes. Until 2013 there was not much information on the subject, but a study led by Sara Goldrick-Rab, an academic at Temple University in Philadelphia, clearly reflected the statistics and data on this situation, which continues and continues to this day.

According to the research, more than a third of these young people do not have the money to eat properly. The situation that worsens due to the hundreds of thousands of dollars that must be paid to attend university, which is recorded as debt for several years. "It's the saddest thing I've worked on in my career," Goldrick-Rab said after completing the report published by Temple University and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab center, which is the most comprehensive and profound yet this issue in the American nation.

A total of 43,000 students were surveyed, with representation in 66 study centers in 20 states and the District of Columbia. As one of the results of this survey, it was known that 36% of these students did not eat well and did not have a home to be safe or stable. "Food insecurity", a term used by researchers to describe the daily life of these university students by skipping meals or eating food in small portions, exceeded the expected figures, as did the "precarious housing".

On this last subject the students said that sometimes they did not have money to pay the bills and that for this reason, they had to change residence frequently. Another result of the surveys highlighted that in 2017, 9% of them were forced to live in shelters, in a vehicle or in an abandoned building. Also, 6% spent at least a whole day without eating food due to lack of resources. Several reasons are those that cause these conditions of precariousness, among them, the increase in the cost of the studies, the limited availability of part-time jobs and the insufficient assistance for students of limited resources. This situation worries the academics since it affects the performance of these young people, who can not always complete the studies due to the need to integrate into full-time working life.
