Behind the success of cannabis

Por MRod

The cannabis industry released in 2017 an annual report on how the situation was in the United States and, in addition to predicting that the sector can create 283,000 jobs, including agriculture and business administration, it was also called as a solution to the crisis of opiates in the country. But things have gone out of control in some ways.

Marijuana is already a matter of interest for the serious economic magazines of the USA, with eight states already authorizing sale and consumption. Some say that permission for legal sale in California (sixth world economy) and in Canada in 2018 is to blame. The days for the bulletins with the symbol of hemp in seed stores are over. The headlines now appear in Forbes, where they account for the legal business that began in the state of Colorado and is in continuous expansion, despite the threat of the federal government to end it. We must follow the news of capital inflows, such as the one of the Corona beer manufacturer in Canadian Canopy Growth Corp, producer of medical cannabis, or investments such as that of Peter Thiel, founder of PayPal, in Privateer Holdings, which has already raised $ 200 million for businesses related to marijuana, according to Bloomberg and published in El Mundo.

One of the products launched by the fund that Thiel is partner of, based in Seattle, is the Marley Natural line, which uses the image of reggae singer Bob Marley as a claim, in a company in which Cedella Marley, daughter of the reggae icon is involved with. The business has received criticism in Jamaica, besides cultivating the rebellious image of the smoke and the dreadlocks. Marijuana is no longer just an herb to roll and have in a club of consumers. The web of Marley Natural displays oils, vaporizers and cans of carefully designed herbs that can be taken in infusion, baths, inhale and, yes, also smoked, although for this last option it is warned that it can harm the environment due to its emissions, and also affect health. It is their mission to find a space but without disturbing others. The motto of the fund states it clearly: "We are building pioneering global brands to lead, legalize and define the future of cannabis". Who would have imagined this?

Marijuana for medical use was legalized in California in 1996. More than 20 years later, and after several attempts, voters approved Proposition 64, which allowed consumption in authorized homes and bars and its sale to people over 21 years old, coming into force on January 1, 2018. The sale of marijuana is thus legalized throughout the West Coast, where there is an obsession with health, so it has been necessary for companies to stop having the target as a target and market the herb as a remedy for anxiety, insomnia or libido.

In fact, the Marley Natural cans are similar to Body Shop boxes and, in San Francisco, the Eaze company put up fences to welcome the legalization in which they read "Hello marihuana, bye stress (Hello marihuana, goodbye stress)". Cannabis is recommended by the Academy of Sciences to treat chronic pain and there are two million Americans who say they have it. Of these, almost 200,000 end up hooked on opiates, which is causing an epidemic of deaths from overdoses. This is where the business ends wrong and must be regulated, and the reason why a survey resulted in the 55% of interviewees being favorable to its regulation, such as "tobacco and alcohol, with their taxes".
