Comey and Trump, back to the ring

Por dbloggers

The Donald Trump vs. James Comey’s conflict can provide a lot of inspiration for a cinematographic saga, since confidential documents on their relationship during Comey’s years as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation when he decided to investigate his boss’s steps about the possible Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election continue being revealed. This time a series of reports related to frontal attacks that the lawyers of Donald Trump had prepared against the former director of the FBI were fired. According to the journalists who obtained the memorandum they consider this is part of the elaboration of a legal strategy by Trump’s legal advisers, who sought to discredit the James in case of a confrontation with the president.

Apparently, Donald Trump is not as ignorant as he seems or his legal team is extremely good at predicting the possible movements of the ex-director of the FBI. According to AP among the multiple reasons prepared to be given were the adjectives of "Machiavellian," dishonest and "contemptuous of the law and rules", in addition to a group of legal arguments that questioned the credibility of the head of one of the most powerful security forces in the world. Likewise, Trump's lawyers knew that the opening of an investigation would have Comey as the main witness against the president.

The letter revealed to the press is dated June 27, 2017 and was written by Marc Kasowitz, who at that time was Trump’s chief lawyer. The tragedy began just as James Comey started digging into a possible Russian meddling in the 2016 election that brought Donald Trump to the White House. After being warned on several occasions to abandon the investigation, Donald decided to dismiss him without warning and unexpectedly.

However, Trump’s efforts to get rid of the Feds were useless because after Comey’s firing, Robert Mueller was assigned by the Department of Justice to verify if the president sought to block the investigation of the FBI.

Thousands of documents have been reviewed by the Bureau and even, some members of the Trump team have had to collaborate after being proven several misdeeds. Paul Manafort and his assistant Rick Gates, Trump's campaign advisors, fell for their crimes during the campaign that got Donald to victory of the presidential elections. In February, Gates agreed to plead guilty to federal counts of conspiracy and to make false statements.

However, Special Counsel Robert Mueller has not yet been able to unravel if there were links or not with Trump nor if there was a dishonest reason to fire James Comey. That is why the Mueller team is looking for an interview with the president by all means.

On the other hand, the former head of the FBI has not just stood still and in recent months has used several media resources to focus attention on Donald Trump and demonstrate that the American leader is directly involved with the Russians and is a person with few ethical and moral values.

Although at the beginning Donald Trump wanted to justify Comey’s firing arguing a mishandling of the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s emails, he admitted in one of his Twits that was in his mind when he became the president of the United States.

The release of these documents could also affect the investigations of Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller, which could even use them as one more resource to get the president to the court, said some journalists.

During the last months Trump and Mueller attack each other using media or social networks like Twitter. Trump has described Comey as "snitch", "liar" and "unintelligent” and recently said Comey’s dismissal was a great service to the United States.

Yet, some Democratic and federal congressmen think that the dismissal happened after Comey brought Michael Flynn, a "partner" close to the president. At that time, Trump twitted that it was regrettable that Flynn's political life was destroyed due to the "possible" collusion and of course, for having lied to the FBI about his contact with the Russian ambassador.

Robert Mueller has not left his crusade in search of the truth about the Russian intervention in the 2016 elections.
